St John
1 John 1:1-4. Let the just rejoice in the Lord – Psalm 96(97):1-2, 5-6, 11-12. John 20:2-8.
The other disciple saw, and he believed
It certainly seems strange to have an Easter story so close to Christmas but when we are talking about John, the Beloved disciple, the Evangelist, we are talking about love. That God chose to become human in Jesus of Nazareth in a particular time and place, in frightening humility, should rock us to our core every time we think about it. We have just celebrated that astounding reality. But to have that precious life cut off in his prime in a brutal Roman way would also have rocked his friends to the core. Jesus tried to prepare them for what was to happen, but they were frail and scared. The beloved disciple however, when he saw the empty shroud, he saw, and he believed. Let us open our hearts to the fact that God loves us beyond all possible reasonableness.
