Affirmation of love
David is fully committed in his handling of the ark. Every action is performed as though his life depended on it. He even dances ‘with all his might’. Not for the attention of others but to honour, praise and worship God. And once all this is done – the ritual offerings of sacrifice and holocaust –David turns his attention to the basic needs of the people. They are hungry; he provides them food. The communion with the Lord is also a communion with the people. They are cared for as family and had been given the means to care for their families. Jesus too is surrounded by people whom he calls his family: ‘Here are my mother and brothers.’ It seems like a strange rejection of his blood family, but perhaps it is better seen as an affirmation of his love for the people who draw close to him in their need, to hear God’s world, to be healed. The people who drift from the outer regions – the unwanted and friendless. These people are family.
