Treat others as you would like them to treat you

How often do we struggle with Jesus’ directive to always treat others as you would like them to treat you? We see it in the Abram story today, where Lot is asked to choose his direction first and he takes the rich land of the Jordan. Abram goes where God directs him to and is blessed for it. Earlier in Matthew we also hear that we are to love our enemies. Chapters 5-7 of Matthew’s Gospel holds a lot of the ‘tough stuff’ about being Christian. All our basic instincts for self-preservation urge us towards the self-enclosed option but Jesus urges us to be the opposite. It is only when we train ourselves through the power of the Spirit that we can achieve what Jesus demands. It takes a lifetime and the final blessings are indeed worthwhile. Happiness and peace are the gifts that result in always treating others as you would like them to treat you.
