St Vincent de Paul
Job 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23. Let my prayer come before you, Lord – Psalm 87(88):2-8. Luke 9:51-56.
Welcoming others to the table
I’m not an expert on Samaritan culture, but I do know what it’s like to encounter people who disagree with the journey I’m going on. Sometimes it’s because of a valid concern for my wellbeing, but sometimes it’s because they don’t fully understand me or my journey.
Jesus’ response to being unwelcome in the Samaritan village is a merciful one. They don’t understand who he is or his mission, and that’s not enough to condemn them. Our challenge today – particularly on this feast of St Vincent de Paul, who spent so much time with outcasts – is to seek to more deeply understand others we encounter and the journey they are undertaking, such that we might find a welcome place for them at our table.
