Hebrews 10:1-10. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will – Psalm 39(40):2, 4, 7-8, 10, 11. Mark 3:31-35.
Total act of love
The pericope from Hebrews as well as the psalm question the value of our ritualistic worship of God. Sometimes this is real for us too. Our liturgy can be bound up with beautiful rituals but can be soulless. God became flesh and blood in the person of Jesus so that his whole body could be given for us on the cross, and this was a total act of love, an act of God who is love.
How much better would our liturgy be if every act within it was an act of love that then became our mission in the world? In Mark’s Gospel Jesus reveals that anyone who does the will of God becomes his family. He takes away the rigid kinship laws and opens the way to God for all those who open their hearts like the psalmist: ‘Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.’
