About Today Readings

1 Peter 1:10-16. The Lord has made known his salvation – Psalm 97(98):1-4. Mark 10:28-31.

Grace is a free gift

The relationship between grace and holiness is emphasised in today’s readings. We have been left with a legacy from medieval theology that grace is a commodity and that we can earn it and be ‘topped up’ by receiving sacraments. This is not the grace that Peter talks about, or the psalmist. Grace is God’s heartbeat in the world. It is there for us to tap into – we have not had to earn it as it is a free gift. Accepting this gift can bring us to holiness. ‘Be holy, for I am holy’. God has already worked wonders and through Jesus we know the path to take. As Cardinal Newman said, ‘To be human is to change; to be perfect is to have changed often’. By tapping into the grace that surrounds us and is freely available, we will be able to reverse our lives and become one of those who are first.
