About Today Readings

The Beheading of St John the Baptist

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8. You have searched me and you know me, Lord – Psalm 138(139):1-3, 4-6. Mark 6:17-29.

Focus on the good and forgive the mistakes of others

‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside, they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.’ (Matt 23:25)

In today’s reading, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees as hypocrites for following specific laws and neglecting others. He calls them ‘Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!’ (Matt 23:24) How am I just like the Pharisees? How do I get distracted by the procedure and forget to look at the whole picture? How do I miss neglect opportunities for compassion and mercy while stringently nitpicking others?

Lord Jesus, help me to see when I’m hypocritical. Allow me to focus on the good others do and forgive the mistakes of others. May I hold only myself to a higher standard and be the first to excuse my neighbour.
