Ss Martha, Mary & Lazarus
Exodus 33:7-11; 34:5-9, 28. The Lord is kind and merciful – Ps 102(103):6-13. Luke 10:38-42.
Concentrate on our relationship with Jesus
This Gospel has recently been in dispute because of possible feminist interpretations.
Putting that aside, this is a triangle of relationships and Jesus calls us into a relationship with him and the Father. Martha, as leader, invites Jesus into her home, but then she gets distracted by her hospitality activities. Mary, the lesser person, gives Jesus her undivided attention, a deeply spiritual discipleship.
Jesus comforts Martha first, telling her not to fret about so many things when only one is needed and then commends Mary for doing the ‘one thing’. Where do we sit in this scenario? Too busy with home and church affairs to really listen to Jesus, or listening to Jesus first, and then attending to everything else?
The next thing that happens is that the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray. We need to pray first, get the relationship right and then turn to service.
