Jesus as our ‘living water’ enables spiritual life
Without water life doesn’t exist. An essential molecule in photosynthesis and respiration – what an amazing mystery as to how it came to be the reason life exists – that is where God is for us! Ezekiel recounts the story of water flowing from the temple, ‘Wherever the river flows, all living creatures teeming in it will live…wherever the water goes it brings health…’ Fast forward to Jesus’ time of ministry and sick people gathered in the temple to access water for healing. A reminder to us to take care of our waterways so that all peoples have access to health.
Jesus’ boldness in healing a paralysed man who couldn’t access the water, on the Sabbath, ensured he was noticed by Jewish authorities, and as we are reminded in the upcoming days of Easter, that didn’t go well for him! Just as physical water enables physical life, Jesus as our ‘living water’ enables spiritual life – a source of wellbeing, connection with community and love for our Creator God.
