About Today Readings

Ss Michael, Gabriel & Raphael

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14. In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord – Ps 137(138):1-5. John 1:47-51.

Constant need for vigilance

Today we celebrate the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. I must admit, I don’t pray to the angels much. I pray to the saints sometimes, especially Mary, but the angels don’t really form any part of my prayer life. When I do think of the angels, however, I am reminded that the battle between light and darkness is ongoing and there is a constant need for vigilance against bad forces.

The Gospel reading today makes me smile. Just before the part we read, Nathaniel was making fun of Jesus (‘Can anything good come from Nazareth?’). In response, Jesus praises Nathaniel’s bluntness (‘Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit’) and then goes ahead and proves to Nathaniel that he already knows him well, to his core. This feels like a bit of a cool power-move to me.

Lord, remind me that you know me and you are always in control. Help me to live in the light.
