Isaiah 1:10, 16-20. To the upright I will show the saving power of God – Ps 49(50):8-9, 16-17, 21, 23. Matthew 23:1-12.
They do not practise what they preach
There is plenty of food for thought in these readings, but I’d like to focus on just one line: ‘They do not practise what they preach.’ This sums up so much of Jesus’ anger in the Gospels. In one word: hypocrisy. We say one thing with our words and do another with our actions. At a psychological level, we can sometimes get upset with the very issues that we struggle with ourselves. Jesus rather taught us to be humble and authentic. We may need his help to be ‘washed clean’ and start again when we fail. Today we pray to be people of integrity, who ‘learn to do good, search for justice and help the oppressed’.
