A light that shines in the dark
Today might seem to be about endings: we conclude the month and the year. And we might look back on what has been.
Today’s Gospel looks all the way back – to the beginning of time. ‘In the beginning was the Word . . . and the Word was God.’ Can our minds stretch so far? It tells how this everlasting Word became incarnate in Jesus Christ, in a particular time and place.
Jesus has come as life, light, grace; he is the way to know God. Yet there is also a lot of present tense: we still see ‘the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth’. This is what will carry on into the New Year too. No matter the ups and downs of what has been, God’s grace and love live on in new ways – incarnate in all the days of our lives.
