About Today Readings

St Francis of Assisi

Galatians 1:13-24. Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way – Psalm 138(139):1-3, 13-15. Luke 10:38-42.

Mary has chosen the better part

It is hard not to side with Martha, who seems to have been left with all the cooking and entertaining. She definitely became frazzled and resentful of her sister, who stayed with Jesus.

Anyone who has prepared a dinner party for friends would know the issue. It takes planning, organisation and preparation well ahead of time to be able to present a delicious meal and enjoy the company of guests.

Perhaps Jesus was just saying ‘Keep it simple, Martha. We will enjoy whatever you have ready. Come and spend time with me’.
