The path back to God
In contemplating the cross we contemplate what ails us, and what heals us, our disease and the cure. In the wounds and indignity of Jesus we see the very worst of us. Our cruelty, hatred, indifference, self-preservation, cowardice and lust for power. These have led our God to the cross.
But this isn’t the full story. While Jesus was taken to the cross by us, he also went to it willingly for us. Calvary was more than an execution. It was a sacrifice and he, not his killers, made the offering.
Our darkness is poured out on him, and is exhausted. His love is more. His willingness to suffer with and for us overcomes our sin, and opens the path back to God. As he offers himself, he knows and loves each one of us. He gazes at us and invites us to gaze upon him and to be healed.
