About Today Readings

Dedication of St Mary Major

Numbers 12:1-13. Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned – Ps 50(51):3-7, 12-13. Matthew 14:22-36.

What is God asking of me?

It’s one thing to listen and be moved by the words of Christ, another to put complete trust in him.

I’m an anxious person, and I like to do my best to mitigate risks. I spend a lot of time thinking about things that might go wrong and how I might respond. I try to anticipate problems and not put myself in situations in which it’s likely things might go wrong. In general, this has helped me find success and happiness in life, as even when things go wrong my mind has often already worked through what to do in that scenario.

Today’s Reading asks me some challenging questions: How much do I avoid doing the discomforting things God might be asking of me? How much is my avoidance of risk keeping me from fully becoming the person God wants me to be?
