The Transfiguration of the Lord

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14. The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth – Psalm 96(97):1-2, 5-6, 9. 2 Peter 1:16-19. Mark 9:2-10.

Listen to him

The Transfiguration is familiar and yet unsettling. The divine is made manifest in the experience of the disciples. If we are attentive, we may notice our lives are suffused with ‘God moments’. We can recognise the way God relates to us, even if it not as dazzling as the Transfiguration. These everyday experiences may be different, but they are open to us if we heed God’s words: ‘Listen to him’. Be attentive to Jesus. In this way, the possibility of relationship grows.

Peter’s desire to stay, because ‘it is wonderful to be here’, is not met with Jesus’ rebuke in Mark’s account. Nevertheless, the quartet descend the mountain. Our relationship with God, in which we hope to rest in a full and complete way, draws us into action now. Those ‘God moments’ call us into service of those who are in need.
