Opportunities to serve and listen together

Today’s Gospel involving Mary and Martha can get under one’s skin. Many women can remember times when they found themselves in the shoes of Martha, having to serve and look after others while they relax and converse. It’s not particularly good hearing Jesus take Mary’s side. Why doesn’t he or one of the other men do the serving, then?

Perhaps let’s look at it a different way. In this world, women were expected to be the ones serving men. Jesus was giving permission for Mary, a woman, to ‘choose the better part’. Is this not permission for all women to be given that choice? An opportunity for men and women to reconsider what’s important in social situations, and find ways to allow both to serve and listen together?

We pray today that women in our Church be given more opportunities to ‘choose the better part’ in service of God.
