About Today Readings

Tue 7th. Ss Perpetua and Felicity Is 55:10-11; Mt 6:7-15

In this special Lenten series – Darkness to light: An intimate journey with Jesus – our guest writer looks to the Gospel stories for answers to the questions that many of us ask when faced with difficult times.

‘Do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one.’

In my grief I live on a knife-edge. I am sustained and heartened by the hope others give me. I am eviscerated by my own sadness. Sometimes I feel there is nothing left inside me. Is this the evil one testing me? In the Gospels Jesus experiences a testing at the start of his ministry – called the temptations in the desert – and his faith in a loving Father is equally tested in his crucifixion: ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’ Lord Jesus, help me to choose hope when I am tested. Strengthen me with your angels of goodness.
