About Today Readings

Ss Perpetua & Felicity

Isaiah 1:10, 16-20. To the upright I will show the saving power of God – Psalm 49(50):8-9, 16-17, 21, 23. Matthew 23:1-12.

Whom do we follow?

‘Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom’. So begins the reading of Isaiah today. Today we remember Perpetua and Felicity, two of the saints still commemorated in the Roman Canon. The ruler of Rome did not listen to the Word of the Lord. The Emperor Septimius Severus had forbidden any conversion to Christianity. He celebrated his birthday on this day in 203 by killing these Christians in ancient Carthage, modern Tunisia. Tradition says Perpetua was 22 years old with a young child at breast. The martyrs challenge us. Whom do we follow? Our prime ministers are not like the old Roman emperors. Jesus said, ‘You must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master and you are all brothers and sisters’ (Mt 23:8). In recalling Perpetua and Felicity today we also remember the one they followed.
