About Today Readings

Genesis 32:23-33. In my justice, I shall see your face, O Lord – Ps 16(17):1-3, 6-8, 15. Matthew 9:32-38.

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them

At points in the Gospels we read a summary sentence which often reflects Jesus’ understanding of the people who flock to hear him. In today’s Gospel one such sentence reads: ‘When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.’

Jesus has great understanding of the needs of these people. This sentence sums up his reaction after teaching them and curing their ailments. But especially he wants to give them hope in God. He will provide a new kind of leadership when he founds his Church on 12 disciples. They will shepherd those who will hear them.

Today let us pray for those priests, religious and laypeople who do so much shepherding. May the Lord of the harvest send more labourers.
