Hebrews 12:4-7, 11-15. The Lord’s kindness is everlasting to those who fear him – Psalm 102(103):1-2, 13-14, 17-18. Mark 6:1-6.

God’s excellent example

Our relationship with God is like that of a parent and child. Sometimes, that can mean punishment when we transgress. However, that punishment is delivered lovingly, which means God must be an excellent parent, because any earthly parent will tell you that appropriate discipline can be hard to deliver. God also shows good parenting skills by following through on his promises to those children who are well-behaved. However, any parents who are reading this will know that despite our best efforts, children often treat their parents disrespectfully and refuse to listen. We see this in Mark when Jesus tries to teach in the synagogue in his hometown. He is greeted by a sceptical audience who try to pull him down a peg or two. Like a good parent, he still does his best, healing a few sick people, despite his amazement at the other’s terrible attitude. As a mother of two, I know exactly how he feels.
