Restored to life
In today’s Gospel, Jesus frees two demoniacs from the spirits that possess them. It should be a cause for great rejoicing. Not only has he liberated them, he has made it possible for the people of the territory to travel again along the road where the demoniacs dwelt. But instead the local community begs Jesus to leave.
It’s natural to assume that we would feel accepted in the presence of Jesus. But maybe first we would have to contend with the parts of us that we don’t accept or moments of which we’re ashamed. If you’ve spent a lifetime telling yourself that there’s something wrong with you (or having others do the same), the impulse to flee any confrontation with those parts of yourself can be strong. But today we’re invited to keep our eyes on the demoniacs. No matter how terrible they might have seemed or felt, Jesus did not condemn them (or even their demons) but restored them to life.
