Glory and praise for ever! – Daniel 3:52-56.

‘You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’

St Ignatius of Loyola writes ‘It is not so much knowledge that fills and satisfies the soul, but the intimate understanding and relish of the truth.’ God is eternal love and truth, and Jesus, God’s only Son, is the way, the truth and the life. We are told that he will set us free from the enslavement of sin, the refusal to let God be God in our lives: ‘If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.’

In this context, Jesuit spiritual guide and author Patrick O’Sullivan writes, following Ignatius, that God calls people to be ‘free, at ease with themselves, and led by the particular grace given to each one’. He names as a sign of the Good Spirit that our ‘awareness of sin is always marked with hope and leads us back into the relationship with Jesus and others’. This is cause for consolation.
