St John de Avila
Acts 15:1-6. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord – Psalm 121(122):1-5. John 15:1-8.
We are never on our own
How earthy are today’s readings? There is conflict regarding the Law of Moses and new believers so the authorities go to Jerusalem to discuss. They talk, listen and work it out – and in the meantime further validate the fledgling Christian community, working out ways for it to flourish. Dad mowed over the strawberry patch, the result was en masse strawberry production – the right ‘vines’ got pruned. This time of year is harvest time for vineyards – they’ve soaked up all the water and sun of spring and summer (more water than usual), after a winter pruning and now the fruits are on offer. Our spiritual selves need some reconnection with Jesus – some pruning, watering and sun – aka fellowship, eucharist, community and action – a reminder that we are with others, not on our own.
