About Today Readings

Colossians 3:1-11. The Lord is compassionate to all his creatures – Ps 144(145):2-3, 10-13. Luke 6:20-26.

We are all equal in Christ’s favour

Today’s reading from Colossians reminds us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. This is an invitation to do something of a personal audit to see where we may be stuck in the material world, lured into consumption and profligacy and leading lives that may have lost some of the grace needed to greet God. Paul is no nonsense when he lists anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language coming from our mouths. So often we can speak without thinking. We may be gossiping or telling tales or tittle-tattling in a way that destroys others’ reputations, passes on information that is untrue or lends suspicion to someone’s motives or character. Paul exhorts us to put on a new self that is one with the Christ we follow. Similar to Galatians 3:28, we are reminded we are all equal in Christ. Let us bask in the knowledge that God has no favourites and lift our efforts to love.
