St Clare
Deuteronomy 34:1-12. Blessed be God who filled my soul with life! – Ps 65(66):1-3, 5, 16-17. Matthew 18:15-20.
Blessed be God who filled my soul with life!
St Clare was born into a wealthy and noble family, yet came to find life not in material things, but in her relationship with God. Most of the rest of her life was spent striving against all odds to preserve the simple possession-less way of prayer that was so good for her spirit. It’s surprising just how many people wanted her to relax her ideal of poverty, including prelates and popes. Perhaps many of us would also be shamed by her commitment. Yet I imagine that if we truly find God, we are filled with life so much that material things only get in the way. It is relationships of love that keep people on the margins going. Let us seek true life today and let us affirm that in others.
