About Today Readings

Hebrews 2:14-18. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever – Psalm 104(105):1-4, 6-9. Mark 1:29-39.

Peace comes in stillness and silence

Action and contemplation, renewal and outpouring, these are the patterns of Christ’s life and we are called to follow his example. Martin Luther said, ‘I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer’ and that’s because the power of stillness and contemplation is what drives the modern mystic. We learn from Jesus that his power to heal comes from his personal relationship and encounter with God. How easy it is to rely solely on our own inner resources and neglect the opportunities to walk with God in the cool of the day. The chaos of daily life and service can quickly and quietly steal our inner peace and joy, but it is in the stillness and silence where peace returns like a dove to nest, and the first drops of dew appear before dawn. These encounters leave us refreshed, renewed and reinvigorated for the challenges of life.
