Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.– Ps 97(98):51-6. Matthew 10:7-13.
Our greatest blessing
Today’s Readings concern the Law of God. Paul includes some specific history: when Moses received the tablets of the Law, his face shone with glory so much that the people struggled to look upon him. And yet Paul calls the Law ‘the ministry of death’ and looks forward to a glory even greater than that which bedazzled the Chosen People of old.
We need to be reminded of the whole of salvation history, of which the Law was a lower, stop-gap measure given to fallen humanity. Jesus Christ, by his death and Resurrection, restores a relationship between God and humanity the like of which has not been experienced since the Garden of Eden.
Before and after the Law, humanity had and has a relationship of intimate companionship with God – a relationship consisting entirely of love, parent to child.
Jesus declares that he has come to ‘fulfill’ the Law, so that ‘all [will be] accomplished’ – our greatest blessing.
