How to pray
The disciples must have recognised the uniqueness of Jesus’ prayer and the impact it had on his life and relationships. Jesus unlocked this secret by explaining that prayer is as natural as a child asking their father for food. This same faith and trust must also be the basis of our prayers. The temptation to be a self-made person is real in capitalist societies that celebrate individualism and honour the solo journey. Jesus teaches the disciples a communal form of prayer, centred on a staple source of food. Our daily bread sustains us when it is blessed, broken and shared with others. This form of prayer is about we not me.
