About Today Readings

Jonah 3:1-10. A broken, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn – Ps 50(51):3-4, 12-13, 18-19. Luke 11:29-32.

As Gospel people we are the mouthpiece of God

Last week we placed Ashes on our foreheads and were entreated to ‘turn away from sin’. For generations this has been the call – Jonah was successful in asking the Ninevites to do so – with the king asking everyone to put on sackcloth and ashes, humbling the community to see that actions of greed and harm are not the way of a powerful God. The greatest and the least made amends together for fear of God’s wrath. How do we translate that to today? Not enough of our ‘greatest’ see the harm of inequality, inequity, injustice and harm to the environment that is being caused, nor fear the outcomes of policy and decision-making that will affect generations to come. We need a Jonah to be the mouthpiece of God – we, as Gospel people, need to be the Jonahs of our time – radically calling out the harm that is being caused to the most vulnerable by the most powerful.
