About Today Readings

Galatians 5:18-25. Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 11:42-46.

A new way to live

The lawyers and the Pharisees that feature in Luke’s Gospel were not bad people. They were righteous and tried hard to live according to the Law. Unfortunately, they had made the Law in their own image, distorted it with detail that made it impossible for the poor to follow and impossible to live completely in faith. Jesus reverses this attitude in his teaching by calling those who are poor, who are hungry, who weep, who are hated because of his name; it is they who are blessed. This offers us a way to live that is different to the consumerist world around us. We are called to be holy, to be separate.
