Wednesday in Holy Week
Isaiah 50:4-9. Lord, in your great love, answer me – Psalm 68(69):8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34. Matthew 26:14-25.
Surely not I, Rabbi?
Of all the hauntingly poignant moments in the story of the Passion, this phrase of Judas’ is the most grievous. The opening chord which introduces the Great Betrayal is about to unfold. As the terrifying events of the evening race towards the morrow, the apostles may well have missed this time-bomb, even as they registered Judas stepping out of the Temple police contingent to greet Jesus. It would only have been afterwards, perhaps on the Shabat that they began to talk. Imagine the dawning horror of realisation that it had been one of their own who had sold the Master to a criminal’s death. Yet my heart sits uneasy. Betrayal. Surely not I, Lord? ‘You have said so’, he replied.
Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.
