About Today Readings

St Hilary

Hebrews 2:14-18. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever – Psalm 104(105):1-4, 6-9. Mark 1:29-39.

He cast out devils and cured many who were suffering from disease

In Mark’s Gospel (1:29-39) we see Jesus begin his healing ministry. It starts simply with Jesus going to his friends’ house. Once there and finding Simon’s mother-in-law ill it would have been impossible for Jesus to ignore her suffering. [It would be like going for a walk with a friend who is weighed down with baggage while you walk unencumbered. It would be a hard-hearted person who didn’t offer to take some of that burden; as well as the likelihood the friendship wouldn’t last long.] But after tending to people all evening, Jesus got up before dawn to pray. I imagine those prayers centred on the decisions he needed to make. ‘Is this what I should be doing? I’m not sure if I’m cut out for this? Do I have the strength? God, if this is your will, give me the strength. Where do I go from here?’

God as we make decisions in our lives, we pray for your guidance and the strength to do your will.
