Recognise the image of God in each other

‘If your brother or sister sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone.’ But how often do we prefer to tell someone else, whether a friend, a spouse or someone in authority, rather than have the conversation directly with the person who hurt us? How can they correct their mistake if they don’t know about it? And how much kinder would it be to approach them ourselves and have the courage to have a potentially difficult or uncomfortable conversation, rather than to denounce them to others without first giving them an opportunity to make amends privately? Jesus is encouraging us to recognise the image of God in each other and to act lovingly in all our relationships, which includes taking responsibility for gently holding each other to account when needed, helping to reconcile and grow in love, wisdom, humility and goodness.
