About Today Readings

St John of the Cross

Isaiah 45:6-8, 18, 21-26. Let the clouds rain down the Just One, and the earth bring forth a Saviour – Psalm 84(85):9-14. Luke 7:19-23.

Jesus shows what it means to be the Messiah

In today’s Gospel, Jesus relies on his actions to show John’s disciples who he is. He doesn’t answer their question with ‘Yes, I am’. Instead, he shows what it means to be the Messiah. It is about caring for others, curing those who are sick and being with the poor. For him, in that moment, showing compassion and care was far more important than words. It is a reminder that listening to God’s Word is the beginning, the impetus for us to act in order to make the lives of others better.
