Galatians 5:18-25. Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 11:42-46.
Let us be directed by the Spirit
What an excellent guide to discernment of spirits that Paul leaves us. The evil spirit brings sexual immorality, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness. This is some of what we experience in moments of spiritual desolation. The good spirit brings love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. This is what experiences of spiritual consolation look like. We feel encouraged to love God and each other as best we can, and we have a sense of gratitude for God’s faithfulness and steadfast love. When we sometimes struggle to discern whether we are experiencing consolation or desolation, we can look at the feelings we are experiencing and where they are leading us. Are they leading us away from God and away from others, or are they leading us towards greater love, even if we are being asked to deepen our conversion, to turn away from wrong paths and repent anew?Email this Print This Page
