‘Must we wait?’
Things will get better. They will get better. I will get better. So often we try to comfort ourselves with these words. We say that the future will be better even if our hearts aren’t sure. Part of us might believe that God, who created the Earth, is also saving it and therefore: things will get better. But another part is unsatisfied and frustrated by all the ugly and messy stuff that we have to deal with now. ‘Must we wait?’, we beg. When John’s disciples came to Jesus, they saw a glimpse of this ‘better’. People were healed and given hope. It helped them to see God’s presence in the present, even if the honeymoon time as disciples wouldn’t last. So when things are difficult, we can remember those signs, for God, who ‘formed the light and created the dark’ is revealed in hope.
