What can I do for you before I am taken from you?
At some times in life we have been leaders, and at other times followers. We are part of the cycle of giving and receiving, teaching and learning. This is the story of Elijah and Elisha today. It begins with the human love between them, and Elisha’s feeling of dependence on his prophet mentor. We rely on our teachers, but there comes a time when we must go on alone. Yet Elisha isn’t completely bereft. He bravely asks for a share of Elijah’s spirit, and picks up the cloak that represents the prophet’s God-given power. So might we, as leaders, provide for those who come after us. May we set an example, love and inspire other people. And, as followers, may we have the courage to let go, to trust in God and grow in our spirit.
