About Today Readings

St Teresa of Ávila

Romans 2:1-11. Lord, you give back to all according to their works – Ps 61(62):2-3, 6-7, 9. Luke 11:42-46.

Act justly and kindly

Few escape Jesus’ attacks of woe in today’s Gospel reading, which continue to apply to us today. Do we sometimes focus our attention on minor observances and neglect justice and the love of God? It can be much easier to genuflect or bow correctly, to comply with liturgical rules, to observe ritual purity and piousness. It is much harder to make room in our hearts for those we disagree with, for those who practise religious observances differently to us, for those who are poor and have nothing to offer us in return. When we focus rigidly on rules without mercy, compassion and love, we risk breaking people with heavy burdens they cannot bear. What help can we offer today to someone who may be breaking under a heavy burden? May God continue to remind us to act justly and kindly towards all whom we encounter.
