St Hedwig; St Margaret Mary Alacoque
Galatians 5:18-25. Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 11:42-46.
Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit
Visitandine nun and visionary Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690), from the monastery at Paray le Monial in France, told her spiritual director of three revelations she had had, which he came to believe were authentic. As a result of her visions, she promoted a yearly feast day on the Friday following the Feast of Corpus Christi, which came to be known as the Devotion to the Sacred Heart. Next year (2025), the monastery will celebrate 350 years since the apparition first happened.
In the First Reading, St Paul to the Galatians talks about the fruits of the Spirit: ‘The Spirit brings love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control.’
The Spirit came to St Margaret Mary, and the fruit of her vision was a Church-wide devotion.
