About Today Readings

St Anthony

1 Samuel 17:32–33, 37, 40–51. Blessed be the Lord, my Rock! – Psalm 143(144):1–2, 9–10. Mark 3:1–6.

We respond afresh to God’s love

There is a fine line between grief and anger. Today’s Gospel comes at us with Mark’s typical bluntness. Jesus goes into a synagogue, which is supposed to be a place of prayer and encounter with God. It is occupied by people who seem interested in an encounter with nothing more than their own cleverness. They can’t see the wood for the trees, trying to catch Jesus breaking a rule and missing out on the entire forest of God’s love. Jesus experiences both grief and anger in the same moment. He is grieved they are so inflexible and angered by their lack of compassion. The psalm praises God as ‘my rock’ by singing ‘a new song’. God’s love is as old as any rock. But that fact invites us to a fresh response. God’s beauty is ever ancient, ever new. This day, God will ask us to stretch out the part of ourselves that feels most withered.
