Reflect on your motivations

I think we all sometimes need a reminder to question our motivations. I remember when I started university, telling my family that most of the people in my disability studies course were Christians. My atheist brother scoffed and said, ‘That’s because they’ve all been brought up with a guilt complex. They feel like they have to look after those poor disabled people’. I was quite upset by him saying that. Is that what he thought about me? But it did get me thinking about why I wanted to work with people with disabilities, and it is something that I continue to ponder. Do I work with people on the margins to make myself feel better and more Christian, or is it because of a genuine commitment to equity? Even if my answer is ‘because of a sense of equity’, it is still important to keep reflecting.
