The Son of God
The earliest surnames were based on personal names – eg, John’s son becomes Johnson, Jack’s son becomes Jackson. Other surnames denoted a family’s occupation – Smiths forged the steel, Coopers fashioned barrels, Fletchers crafted arrows. For centuries it was almost mandatory that children continued their fathers’ work.
Jesus, too, knows that his work is the work of the Father. ‘I tell you most solemnly, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.’
Just as Jesus carried on the work of the Father, we pray too for the courage to continue that work in our world today.
