I am the vine, you are the branches
‘No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine’. What a rich Gospel passage. Every time I hear it, I am struck by a different part: I am the true vine; remain in me as I also remain in you; apart from me you can do nothing. Sitting with it this time around, it was the image of a branch trying to bear fruit by itself that captivated me. Imagine an apricot tree branch saying to the tree, ‘I don’t need to stay connected to the trunk and its roots, I can bear fruit all on my own’. Of course, the branch has to remain connected to the trunk which provides life to the branch. Yet how often do we think that we can bear fruit on our own, how often do we think that the resources available to us are ‘ours’ and due to our own hard work alone? May we remember that any fruit we bear is a result of God living in and working through us.
