The parable of the talents

Although a parable today’s Gospel is challenging reading when over laid with our belief in a loving God. The essence of Jesus’ message is of love, trust and reward. Throughout our lives we will be offered opportunities to love God and others. In using our talents well in serving others we will be rewarded by glimpsing God in those we serve. When we fail to love or serve the other, we ‘punish’ ourselves as we miss the opportunity to encounter God. Those who love and serve greatly will be rewarded with more experiences to encounter God, whereas those who fail to love and serve will have their vision clouded and will not see God in those around them. Our true reward will only be revealed when Jesus returns and all is made perfect. Until then live your daily life as a small part of your eternal life, seek and serve those in need and love God above all things. In living this way those who have more will be given more. The parable teaches us of life lived abundantly, not of a vengeful God as a cursory reading may reveal.
