The road to truth

I wonder if St Paul had a premonition of what life would be like in the 21st century? Probably not, but his words about people who seem like a ‘gong booming or a cymbal clashing’ are prescient. They remind me of self-promoters, those who devote time and energy to enhancing their own image. They have a personal ‘brand’, meaning they like being the centre of attention whether on social media or anywhere else. St Paul’s famous words about love undermine this silliness. Love, he says, is patient and kind. It is ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure. Perhaps we could take those six aspects of love and think about them today and pray that we might grow in the ones that seem to elude us. There is a difference between being kind to oneself and being infatuated with oneself. Love, says St Paul, is the road to truth.
