About Today Readings

Genesis 8:6-13, 20-22. To you, Lord, I will offer a sacrifice of praise – Psalm 115(116):12-15, 18-19. Mark 8:22-26.

The spirit of God’s grace

The dove, returning with an olive branch in its beak, is a sign of hope. Often it is used to represent the presence of the Holy Spirit. Grace flying into our lives. Amid the seemingly endless waters, the branch in the beak offers a sign of dry ground, and so offers hope of a future for Noah and all God’s creation.

Jesus comes into the life of a blind man at Bethsaida and offers hope, a representative sign in the concrete reality of a man’s life. The spittle on the hands, the hands on the eyes, this is a miracle worked up close. The man is cured. He is graced, given God’s favour. This is what God is like: coming into our lives, offering hope, curing us.

God’s Spirit offers us grace this day, no less than is offered Noah and the man at Bethsaida. How am I to respond?
