About Today Readings

St Romuald

2 Kings 2:1, 6-14. Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord – Psalm 30(31):20, 21, 24. Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18.

Give thanks for those who show us the way to God

Elisha’s commitment to journey with Elijah presents an image of our call to companionship in faith. His desire for ‘a double share’ of Elijah’s spirit might cause us to reflect on those who witness to a life of faith, who show us the way to a relationship with God. We may not inherit from them the capacity to part the Jordan River. But in our first reading that is only a sign of the power of relationship with God, not an end in itself.

Those who show us the way to God usually do so quietly, gently. They are not people who ‘trumpet’ their good deeds and prayers. They point to God, not to themselves. Today you might reflect, savour and give thanks for those in your own life who have quietly, gently, pointed the way to a relationship with God.
