Work for the kingdom

I wish we knew a little more about St Joseph, especially his relationship with Jesus. Fathers and sons often navigate some choppy seas during the young man’s adolescence, and Jesus was fully human. Going through a tough time doesn’t mean that he sinned. There may have been days when he was a bit grumpy or abrupt or impatient with Joseph. I am sure St Joseph supported him along the way. Both men worked with their hands, turning wood into useful objects. Some experts say that today’s young people might be better off doing more physical things. I imagine Jesus and Joseph side by side in the workshop, being creative with the timber that comes from the natural world, respecting creation. Perhaps today we can imagine ourselves working side by side with Jesus, also respecting creation, trying to contribute in some way to the human family. Jesus spoke a lot about work. We are all called to work for the kingdom.
