Spiritual stocktake
We all know about EOFY, the end of the financial year. It is the season of stocktake sales. We could just as well do a bit of spiritual stocktaking as we near the end of the Christian year. Today’s readings will help the process. The psalmist says, ‘I kept my feet firmly in your paths’, even though they have clearly been living through a time of distress. The psalm prays more than once, ‘turn your ear’. The words are vulnerable. ‘Guard me as the apple of your eye.’ Surely there will have been days this year like that, times when we have turned to God in fear, loss, confusion, grief or anguish. The psalm never doubts that God will have been there. The Gospel, on the other hand, allows us to think over times we may have felt stronger, when we have built on whatever has been entrusted to us and helped it grow.
